21 Days of Prayer January 6 2020 Day 2 - The Disciples' Fast

This year we will study 9 Fasts in the Bible

The Disciples’ Fast - Freedom from Sin

Hebrews 12:1-2 (NLT)

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. 2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.[a] Because of the joy[b] awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.

Today let’s throw off some things that slows us down and doesn’t allow us to enjoy the freedom we have in Christ.

How do we do this? We persevere and keep our eyes on Jesus!

Isaiah 58:6 (NIV)

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:

to loose the chains of injustice

and untie the cords of the yoke,

to set the oppressed free

    and break every yoke?

Why is this the Disciples’ Fast?

Matthew 17:14-18 (NIV)

14 When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. 15 “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.”

17 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” 18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.

Unbelieving - not enough faith

Perverse - things of the world that we need to throw off

Ask this today? God how much of the world do I have in me today?

Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

Search me, God, and know my heart;

test me and know my anxious thoughts.

24

See if there is any offensive way in me,

and lead me in the way everlasting.

Pray: Search me, know me and see if there’s any offensive way - lead me in that way

God I’m not going into 2020 with the same habits, addictions and things that take me away from you!
