S. 1 Corinthians 14:22 “Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers. Prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers but for believers.”
O. Speaking in tongues without interpretation does not build up others (it may build up the one who worships privately). But in public, it is confusing, especially for unbelievers. It is a sign to unbelievers that something isn’t right (v.24); however prophecy (speaking God’s word to build up others) is highly valued as believers and unbelievers are built up.
A. Paul commended speaking in tongues (v. 2, v5, v. 15, v.18, v.28 and v.39) but he highly praises prophecy so that the entire church might be built up.
I enjoy the private use of tongues as the Holy Spirit guides me and builds me up; however, I love to proclaim God’s word and build others up through preaching, teaching, mentoring and coaching. This is the value of the prophetic gift.
P. Thank you Father for your word today. Thank you for the Holy Spirit and the gifts you provide through His ministry. I will continue to enjoy private and public worship so that the church might be built up. In Jesus’ name!
